One of the goals of the Henry Center is to produce resources from our initiatives which benefit an audience beyond those in attendance. As a result, we have co-sponsored a variety of initiatives which either have, or will soon, culminate in the production of a book.

2011 | After Imperialism: Christian Identity in China and the Global Evangelical Movement, Ed. David Pao and Rick Cook, Crossway Books

In May 2008 over a dozen evangelical scholars (Chinese and Western) from the United States, Hong Kong and Taiwan, came together to address issues of Christian and evangelical identity. The “Inter-Cultural Theological Conversation” was titled “Beyond Our Past: Bible, Cultural Identity, and the Global Evangelical Movement.” This collection of papers from the conference demonstrates the value of the careful balancing of judicious appropriation of the social sciences and thorough biblical inquiry. Questions of evangelical identity in China and around the world are addressed from the disciplines of history, biblical studies, and systematic theology/contextualization.

2011 | The Pastor as Scholar and the Scholar as Pastor by John Piper and D. A. Carson, Crossway Books

Following the 2009 Gospel Coalition conference John Piper and D. A. Carson presented two talks at Park Community Church in Chicago, IL, sponsored by the Henry Center. The topic of their presentation was on the relationship of scholarship and pastoral ministry. Piper centered on the importance of scholarship and academic pursuits in his role as pastor. Carson, conversely, focused on the importance of pastoral ministry in his career as scholar. The event was enthusiastically received and brought great insight and balance.

Now their talks have been edited with additional content and put into book form. Weaving testimony and teaching, Piper and Carson challenge all those in ministry to think carefully and holistically about their calling. An introduction by Owen Strachan and a conclusion by David Mathis provide context and application to these unique messages.

Pastors and scholars will want to take advantage of this valuable insider perspective from two men who have been acclaimed for their sharp thinking and pastoral hearts.

2010 | Scandalous: The Cross and Resurrection of Jesus by D. A. Carson, Crossway Books

In Scandalous: The Cross and Resurrection of Jesus, D. A. Carson of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School introduces the irony, scandal, and greatness of the work done on the cross. A collection of five talks given at Mars Hill Church of Seattle, Washington and sponsored by the Henry Center, Scandalous represents the fruit of the Center’s Church Partnership Series.

The following is a description of the content of the book:
How are Christians to approach the central gospel teachings concerning the death and resurrection of Jesus? The Bible firmly establishes the historicity of these events and doesn’t leave their meanings ambiguous or open to interpretation. Even so, there is an irony and surprising strangeness to the cross. Carson shows that this strange irony has deep implications for our lives as he examines the history and theology of Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection.

    Scandalous
is the latest addition to the Re:Lit series of Crossway Books, which highlights important theological truths in accessible and applicable ways. The Henry Center is gratified to see this volume in print.

2006 | This Side of Heaven, Ed. Robert J. Priest and Alvaro Nieves, Oxford University Press

Similarly, historically white Christian colleges, universities, seminaries and congregations are struggling to transform themselves into communities that are welcoming to minorities and sensitive to their needs. This collection of new essays is meant to enable those who are engaged in these initiatives to understand the historical linkage of race, ethnicity and Christianity and to explore the ways in which constructive change can be achieved.
